Accomplishments in Academics

People

Academics at Women’s College Hospital (WCH) recognizes that people are the foundation of our work and pivotal to our growth and innovation.  Scientists at WCH have been recognized with many awards and Chairs at the national level and their work, along with those of our early career researchers, have resulted in numerous publications and recognition as one of Canada’s Top 40 Research Hospitals.  WCH continues to invest in the next generation of healthcare professionals and researchers through our undergraduate and post graduate medical trainee placements as well as initiatives like our highly-sought-after summer student programs that involve everyone from high-school students to masters-level trainees.

Projects

At WCH, research is a cornerstone of progress. WCH's continued investment in research funding empowers transformative clinical trials and studies that are shaping the future of patient care, cultivating the next generation of healthcare leaders, and accelerating innovation across the system. In 2024, the WCH Research Grants department played a pivotal role in supporting teams to achieve a 30 per cent success rate in the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Fall Project Grant competition—well above the national average of 21.2 per cent. Over the past five years, we’ve seen a 41 per cent increase in total grant revenue, reflecting our growing influence and impact. Today, WCH oversees 388 active grants, marking a 58 per cent increase in funded projects since 2019. WCH's Learning Health System (LHS) Collaboratory continues to advance its mission through three dynamic working groups: the LHS Data Ecosystem, Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs), and the LHS Collaboratory (Structure and Function). A new LHS Toolkit—designed to support implementation and scale—is set to launch in the coming weeks, further supporting evidence-informed care and continuous learning. In Summer 2024, WCH launched the Education Scholarship Accelerator Program (ESAP)—a pioneering initiative designed to build capacity in education scholarship among health professions trainees. This eight-week pilot program welcomed 13 MD students who completed 12 impactful scholarly projects under the guidance of WCH staff, culminating in presentations at a peer-reviewed research symposium. Throughout the program, students engaged in seven weekly seminars led by 18 dedicated faculty and staff, offering enriched learning experiences and professional mentorship. The response was overwhelmingly positive, with a 90 per cent satisfaction score. Supervisors praised ESAP as “innovative,” a “fantastic opportunity,” and a “very positive experience,” underscoring its potential to shape the future of academic medicine and healthcare education.

Events

The 2025 Day of Excellence in Academics, a celebration of innovation, research, professional practice, quality improvement, collaboration, teaching, and mentorship, featured 67 interprofessional posters that were displayed across the hospital demonstrating the breadth and depth of academic work at WCH.

This fiscal year hosted nine LHS Seminar Series with topics ranging from Patient Engagement, Health Equity, Models of Care, to Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMS).  These highly collaborative and engaging sessions aim to align the hospital on the concept and vision of an LHS and methods to operationalize it.

Academics hosted two new events: the 2024 Inaugural Catalyst Awards where funding supported research, education scholarship or quality improvement initiatives to address significant gaps in access to care, clinical programs, and patient outcomes.  The Substance Use Catalyst Grant funded two projects including:

  • Optimizing and Increasing Referrals to RAAM Clinics from SCOPE
    Project lead: Jennifer Shuldiner, PhD
  • Opening Doors: Using Human-Centred Design to Develop Trauma-Informed Integrated Family Planning Services for Pregnancy-Capable Individuals with Substance Use Disorder at WCH
Co-leads: Dr. Heather Millar, Vanessa Wright, NP, Dr. Jennifer Wyman

The next new event launched has been the Bridging Minds: Health & Science Conversations,  a partnership between WCH and Toronto Public Library. The monthly virtual webinar series leads healthcare professionals and scientists in discussion to gain a deeper understanding of key health and science concepts, learn how to navigate the digital landscape for reliable information, and actively engage with scientific knowledge for informed decision-making.
